Second hand watches
Looking to buy a specfic Omega which is no longer available new, and remember some chatting about used watches on here before.

Anything I should look out for? Watchfinder have a couple on their site but they are like 12 and 16 years old. Is that old for a watch?

i've got a 1958 black dial seamaster which still keeps perfect time. just think they look a bit more subtle than modern watches. as people have said you won't usually make money with an old watch but they don't depreciate much and you get to wear something nice rather than a great chunk of glitz on your wrist

Penners - can’t really go wrong with a Seamaster. Great looking classic everyday watch on a really good bracelet and normally well priced. Very happy with mine, bought used.

Smiths - official watch of the Hillary Everest expedition. Always been unclear if they wore a smiths or a Rolex on the summit bid.

I've got an old Smiths Empire 5 jewel watch that my uncle bought in the late 40's that still keeps perfect time (when I remember to wind it up - no batteries back then) it had to have a tiny spring replaced about 20 years ago which isn't too bad for a 70 year old timepiece.

I used to have a fab fake Gucci that my Mum picked up in Hong Kong for 20 dollars. It told the time and was convincing for about a year until the plate started wearing off.

Re: Second hand watches
Best advice for anyone buying a decent watch for the first time is to find out how often it needs a service / battery replacement (unless you go automatic)

Rolex services are generally every 10 years, which is about the best there is. Brietling and others around 5-7 years and although it may be waterproof, they don't like sea water and that will increase the service rate.

Cost of a service around £250-300 depending on bramf. .

New battery around £150 if not an auto.

My day watch is an auto 1960's Omega constellation, although is a cunt for every month that doesn't have 31 days, as it's a manual wind forward / back job.

In summary, if you keep it for a while, you'll spend more on services / batteries than the cost of the watch.

Re: Second hand watches
Easiest way to see if a watch is real........jump in a swimming pool with it. Even the best fakes struggle with water proofing.

I’ve used watchfinder a couple of times as well as other places like Rankins and a few in Hatton Garden.

My wife wears a gold rolex datejust I got her for her birthday, not showy but vintage looking I bought it last year but it’s second hand and made in 1990, perfect working order and spotless after a good service and repolishing.

Granted watches are rarely an investment that appreciate much but went base rates are paying you the square route of fuck all on a deposit or savings account I’d rather get some pleasure out of wearing it. Also the secondary market is highly liquid so you’re never stuck with an asset you can’t encash easily.

I reckon you could still pick up the seamaster bond editions quite easily. Don't dive in, there's plenty about.

Anyone wearing a gold Rolex is asking for it really, stick out a mile. Pretty tasteless too. Tend to be a watch for people that don't know much about watches bit think it brings status. Probably the most faked watch out there too. The only half decent fake I've seen was a Rolex datejust.

I don't know whether they have the watch you are after but I have used http://www.fitzroviawatches.co.uk and can recommend for authentic high end watches. Basically it's a one man band watch enthusiastic, very knowledgeable.

He does not have a shop so the address on the website is a serviced office in the West End, that's where you can meet the chap to see the items if you don't want them posted. He used to sell on ebay as well.

NPB, yes the person I know who was in Rio was asking for it, I have been very niave imo. The one that shocked me was the lady stopped at traffic lights one came from one side and one the other and grabbed both her arms through the sun roof pulled off her gold Rolex and tried to get her rings.
